Wow, I received an unexpected amount of feedback regarding yesterday's post on standup paddleboard yoga! Lots of general questions and comments, so here are some more photos that show a little bit of what people can expect.
Hoe He'e Nalu = standup paddle surfing in Hawaiian (Hoe = paddle, He'e = surf/slide, Nalu = wave)
An ancient Hawaiian sport, SUP can be done virtually anywhere you have water--in the case of SUP yoga, some kind of marina or bay is perfect. These photos were taken in Marina del Rey, near Los Angeles. The workout from the paddling combined with balancing on your board during yoga poses is low-moderate to moderate-high, depending upon your level and difficulty preference. Either way, you pretty much use your whole core the entire time you are balancing on your board. It's actually a lot easier than it sounds!
We're definitely looking forward to this sport growing around the world (which is already happening!), to the point where we don't necessary always have to bring our boards along when we travel. Luckily, most surf spots are catching on quickly!
Major props to Nikos, who took all of these images while either paddling or doing yoga himself! I think his crazy balance must come from decades of surfing Lunada Bay...
