Very scary news from Russia--President Vladimir Putin just signed a draconian law that punishes people for being openly gay. This includes tourists who are openly gay and are guilty of "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations," which means anything from hand-holding to displaying a rainbow flag on your bag. Hard to believe this is happening in 2013, but the religious right in Russia is obviously determined to fight to the bitter end, even if it means accelerating their steady descent into the moral slums of history.
Not only does this support the view that Russia is swiftly becoming less significant on the world stage and isn't really on par with the rest of the BRICS after all, but when even George W. Bush is reasoning out his stance towards the gay community, you have to stop and wonder when people will view the world outside of themselves and refrain from such fascist and irrelevant rhetoric. It's precisely this kind of hate that can make the world violent and unsafe; ultimately this is the kind of mentality that fuels wars and genocide.
Fortunately, even a somewhat conservative country like our United States is realizing what is the right side of history.
